Directory of Academic Programs and Courses on the Holocaust and Genocide

Are you interested in studying for a degree in  Holocaust and Genocide Studies?

The number of academic degree and teaching programs offered in the interdisciplinary field of Holocaust and Genocide Studies is growing throughout the world.  GPN Genocide Prevention Now will regularly present profiles of individual programs so that students interested in pursuing this field will be able to further understand their options for study.

Programs in Holocaust and Genocide Studies range from the only Ph.D. in the field at this time at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, to various MA programs, undergraduate degrees, minors, concentrations within degree programs, graduate certificate programs, and an online program.

In Issue 8, we have included in our Directory URL links to all individual programs.  We have also added to our Directory the following programs:

Graduate Certificate in Holocaust Education, University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland

Certificate in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.

Concentration in Holocaust Studies, Judaic Studies Program, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Baltimore, Maryland

Undergraduate Minor in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Department of Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Manhattanville College, Purchase, New York

Minor in Holocaust Studies, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, New York

Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Certificate, Program in Holocaust Studies, Center for Jewish Studies, University of Florida, Gainsville, Florida

Holocaust Focus, Minor in Intercultural Studies, Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Illinois
Note also that many universities and colleges have degree programs such as History, Political Science, and International Relations that allow students to choose a specialty in the area of Holocaust or genocide, including as the subject of their doctorate, although there are no formal degrees offered in the fields of Holocaust and Genocide Studies.

We are interested in receiving information about additional university and college level programs in Holocaust and Genocide Studies that do not appear in this Directory. We also invite readers to submit information, descriptions of individual courses and syllabi at universities and colleges in Holocaust and Genocide Studies that do not support full degree programs for GPN to include in the International Repository of Courses in Holocaust and Genocide Studies.  Our aim is to build as full a directory of programs as possible as well as courses in our field to better inform students who choose to study the field of Holocaust and Genocide Studies. All submissions should be sent to: Marc I. Sherman, Director, Holocaust and Genocide Review, GPN Genocide Prevention Now. E-mail: msherman.gpn@genocidepreventionnow.org

FEATURED PROGRAM
BA Minor in Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Studies
Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine
University of Maine, Augusta, Maine

Each month, GPN will highlight a specific program to further enable people to explore opportunities for degrees and courses in the field of Holocaust and Genocide Studies. For issue 8 of GPN, we are happy to profile the:

A Minor concentration open to students of any major - Offered on the Augusta campus

The Holocaust. The Killing Fields. Darfur. Why do such instances of genocide re-occur throughout history? Why do so many people close their eyes to what is happening around them? What can we do to prevent such atrocities? UMA's new Minor in Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Studies examines these critical questions, seeking to provide students with the insight and understanding necessary to help us avoid such acts of human calamity today and in the future.

When the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine moved onto UMA's Augusta campus in 2007, it afforded a unique opportunity for the university to expand its programming in a field of study where the issues could not be more important, pressing and relevant. As part of this expansion of program offerings, UMA is now launching a Minor in Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Studies (HGHRS).

An interdisciplinary program which integrates scholarship and practice, the HGHRS minor encourages students to examine genocide and human rights within their historical and cultural contexts, to understand the causes of genocide, and to consider how to create an environment of tolerance in their world.

A collaborative initiative, the program draws upon the resources of other academic institutions, the community and human rights groups, state and local government, and most especially, the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine.

Housed in the beautiful Klahr Center that graces UMA central Green, the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine's on-site presence has enabled UMA to forge a new and exciting partnership that has already attracted national and international speakers, lecturers, and experts. UMA is, in fact, the only university in the United States that offers a minor in Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights that also has an Holocaust and Human Rights focused center right on its campus.

UMA's Minor in Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Studies is jointly administered by the College of Arts and Humanities and the College of Natural Sciences. Students in any major can elect to pursue the minor.

Program requirements are nine credits of foundation courses, including a service learning course or internship, and nine credits of electives.
