 Quotable

"Arab Spring, Kurdish Winter"

"Turkey often presents itself to the world as a model Muslim democracy, but it is in fact denying basic democratic rights to almost 20 percent of its population. "But while the prime minister frequently expresses his sorrow over the deaths of Palestinian children, he has not so much as mentioned the Kurdish children who have been killed by the army and the police in Turkey.  "Unfortunately, Mr. Erdogan’s recent comment that he would have hanged Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned Kurdish nationalist leader, had he been in power when Mr. Ocalan was arrested in 1999 gives the impression that he is leaning toward the second path. "Turkey has stepped up military operations, banned the leading Kurdish party, the D.T.P., and arrested Kurdish politicians, including me. (I was arrested in November 2006 and spent nine months behind bars, until I was elected to Parliament from prison and granted immunity in July 2007.)  "Since then the government has largely ignored the Kurdish people’s grievances. Turkey’s Kurds, after decades of struggle, must be granted the right to learn and pray in our own language and exercise self-government in our cities and towns."

--  Tuncel, Sebahat (June 17, 2011).  International Herald Tribune.  Arab Spring, Kurdish Winter.  New York Times. Translated from Turkish.  Sebahat Tuncel is a Kurdish member of Turkey’s Parliament who had been in jail a month before she was elected.

WELCOME TO WINTER 2011 ISSUE 8 of GPN GENOCIDE PREVENTION NOW

 EDITOR'S WELCOME
See first of all the two SPECIAL SECTIONS that we pre-published prior to the full Issue 8:

1. DIRECT QUOTATIONS FROM ISRAELI KNESSET HEARING, DECEMBER 26, 2011, ON RECOGNIZING THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

2. IRAN NUCLEAR WATCH

Our world is electric with powerful 'Arab Spring' revolutions now continuing into 'Arab Winter', protests and democratic peoples' initiatives in many places around the world, but we are aware that relentless time marches on in Iran's preparation of deadly nuclear weapons.  GPN again emphasizes our section entitled IRAN NUCLEAR WATCH with more news about expansion of construction facilities for nuclear weapons, underground launch sites, missiles that can reach as far as the shores of the Unites States, and at long last a definitive conclusion: Iran wants nuclear weapons.  Still, there are totally intelligent voices that say we should not be concerned, some who believe that Iran is only developing peaceful nuclear capacity as is its right and others who believe that deterrents - including possible nuclear retaliation - by strong forces in the world will see to it that Iran will never do a nuclear strike, say, against the homeland of the Jews, Israel or its hated Arab rival, Saudi Arabia.  GPN disagrees.  We continue to see the development of nuclear weapons by Iran as the most serious and pressing problem in our tough world.

In this issue GPN reports on a major initiative by the U.S. Government toward prevention of future genocides;on ongoing genocidal destruction in the Sudan area; on the beginning of what we call an "incremental genocide" in Syria; and about the revenge killing at long last of Bin Laden, even as Al Qaeda and the legacy of a proliferating transnational genocidal terrorism thrives in the society of humans.

There is much more in this issue including close-up information shots of Turkey's revered- and more than that - don't dare say a word against him or you will end up in a Turkish jail - founding leader Ataturk, and what U.S. Government officials think about the current leader - you better shut up here also or again you will go to a Turkish jail - the irascible 'sorry, temper lost' - Erdogan.

GPN is happy to bring in this issue once again significant letters to the editor, one by a distinguished genocide scholar who has been on the front line in Cambodia in the effort to install some measure of legal action against the genociders from the disgusting murderous Khmer Rouge era; and another an impassioned report of genocide continuing in Sri Lanka, now against the Tamil who GPN points out were major genociders in their right.  Please be encouraged to think of writing your reports and commentaries to GPN

In the near future, GPN will be installing an interactive mechanism to facilitate the submission of reader comments, opinions, and feedback to GPN stories and articles.  Talkback submissions, like Letters to the Editor, will be carefully moderated by GPN.  We are interested in statements which expand the knowledge and awareness of others, and of course we will rule out any bigotry, incitement or denial.

As previously announced, GPN is also very proud and pleased to confirm the publication of bound volumes of earlier issues. The first book is now in preparation and will include the first 4 Issues of GPN in 2010.  Gorgias Press is an academic publisher located in Piscataway, New Jersey.  Founded in 2001, it has a distinguished book list including a number of works on genocide and ethnic groups.  As of 2010 its catalogue contained 2500 titles.  The first volume heading for publication now will include the first four issues of GPN: Winter 2010, Spring 2010, Summer 2010 and Fall 2010.  This hardcover volume is intended for permanent library collections.  Naturally, we will be providing information about acquiring the printed volumes from Gorgias Press at a later date.

We want to remind readers and invite you to make use of the fine Search facility accompanying all issues of GPN.  The Holocaust and Genocide Review (HGR) section search engine is also fully functional, however, since we are still in the process of entering content into our Web site, some material is not yet available.  We are currently publishing all the material in pdf format on the Web site until we complete our transition.

Registered Affiliates of GPN will receive personally an email notice of a new issue and the full TOC for that issue. Please write to gpn.general@genocidepreventionnow.org to become an affiliate of GPN.  To place yourself on a GPN Special Mailing List for Readers who Will Receive Announcements of New Issues,  please complete the following:

"Resilience takes many forms, including the dedication and courage to move forward.  While we must never forget those who we lost, we must do more than simply remember them - we must sustain our resilience and remain united to prevent new attacks and new victims.

"As we commemorate the citizens of over 90 countries who perished in the 9/11 attacks, we honor all victims of terrorism, in every nation around the world.  We honor and celebrate the resilience of individuals, families, and communities on every continent, whether in New York or Nairobi, Bali or Belfast, Mumbai or Manila, or Lahore or London."    -- U.S. Government statement on 9/11, May 30, 2011.
